Economic diplomacy is no longer a secondary role for chancelleries. In a world where competition for investment, markets and technology is increasing, African embassies are becoming real centres of economic acceleration.
This transformation is reflected in three major developments. First, the creation of specialized trade advisers in diplomatic missions to identify investment opportunities and facilitate partnerships. Secondly, the systematic organisation of economic missions and business forums. Finally, digital integration into economic promotion tools.
Senegal, Morocco and Rwanda are among the African countries that have made the most progress in this strategic reorientation of their diplomatic network. Morocco has deployed economic advisers to over 40 embassies, generating an estimated US$ 3.2 billion in FDI in 2024.
The key to success is the formation of a new generation of diplomats who can speak business, understand innovation ecosystems and position their country as a prime destination for investment and strategic partnership.
