A trophy of international prominence: Cameroon's victory at the CAN Feminine 2026

Sport is more than just physical activity, but « the most visible way to show the flag, to exist in the eyes of others and to be present on the world map » (Pascal Boniface, Geopolitics of Sport, Paris, Armand Colin, 2014). In this sense, Cameroon's victory at the 2026 women's CAN represents much more than a football success, and contributes to Cameroon's international influence. The shift of the strong delegation of the Cameroonian Government (Prime Minister, Minister of Sports, Minister for the Advancement of Women, among others...) for the final match is quite evocative.

When sporting victory rhymes with international visibility

First of all, by being champions of Africa 2026, Cameroon's Indomptable Lions are helping to enhance Cameroon's continental visibility as a great football nation. Long before, the senior men's team illustrated Cameroon on the world sports scene as a great football nation by contributing to its influence. This influence by football was such that Cameroon built its reputation from the 1990s on its talents. At the time, communication and information technologies were not so sophisticated as today.

The world then discovered this Central African country thanks to the exploit of its footballers, where the names « Thomas Nkono countries », « countries of Roger Milla », and later « land of Samuel Eto »...

The victory of the Cameroonian women's team at CAN 2026 added one more trophy to the list. It reinforces this influence all the more as Cameroon becomes the fourth country to win a women's CAN in 14 editions since its creation (the others being Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa). It would not be surprising to see the emergence of new Cameroonian names such as « country of Aboudi Ongené » or « Michaely Bihina ».

Second, the Women's CAN 2026 is a catalyst for international attractiveness, in the sense of its ability to attract and interest talent recruiters. The performance of the Indomptable Lionnes shows that Cameroon is a niche of female football talent. This attraction is illustrated, for example, by the interest that major European and American clubs began to show for some players at the end of the final. The transactions in the next mercatos will certainly have to see certain Cameroonian players being coveted. Finally, this victory has an international brand marketing stake.

CAN and International Marketing « HEMLE » Made in Cameroon

A brand is a name, and more broadly a set of identifying signs. For the last five years, the Cameroonian nation has been building a brand of its own, and sport tends to make it internationally popular: it is the « Hemlé » (a native of the Bassa « spirit of combativity »).

In recent years, Cameroonian athletes in general and footballers in particular have been ambassadors of this brand. made in Cameroon and continue to popularize it internationally. It is this Hemlé, (in the words of the athletes), this courage characteristic of the Cameroonian people to return adverse circumstances to redemption, which thwarts the prognosis of the great observers.

At CAN 2025, senior male football team coach David Pagou promoted Cameroonian Hemlé as the specific identity of Cameroonian footballer:

« Hemlé is the heart; Even when in front of you you have someone stronger, you do not retreat; You go ahead, you show him you're here, you're here. The Indomitable Lions have Hemlé (...) We showed that we're Cameroonians, so that's Hemlé. » (interview after the chicken game where Cameroon dominated South Africa 2-0).

A few months later (July-August 2026), this Hemlé was highlighted in the win of the women's CAN 2026. The Hemlé here resulted in the victory of a team that initially could not qualify, but was recovered following the decision of the CAF to expand the number of participating teams. This unexpected draft within a month of the competition reduced its preparation time compared to other competitors. It should be added that for more than 80% of Cameroonian players, it was the first participation in a CAN; They also faced the so-called favorite teams (Morocco, the organizing country, and Nigeria, which Cameroon had never succeeded in defeating).

Despite these circumstances, the team finished champion, with the best goaltender and player in the competition bonus. Beyond the celebration of sports prowess, it is the fighting spirit (Hemlé) Cameroonian who is internationally promoted and recognized once again by sport: the international aura of Cameroon is strengthened, and the identity of the Cameroonian nation as strong and resilient is promoted.

Although Cameroon's indomitable Lions have long been on the African and world sports scene (Jean Emmanuel Pondi, Understanding the impact of « Indomitable lions » Cameroon in the Geopolitics of World Football, Yaoundé, Afro Éveil, 2022), « Indomptable lions » must still build their hegemony. The African champions' sacre of CAN 2026 is the first stone in the work. The next great rendezvous, like the Women's World Cup, will be opportunities to assert. Meanwhile, Cameroon can legitimately enjoy the international visibility conferred by its status as African champion. It is also up to the Government to capitalize more on this resource. soft power by consolidating sporting diplomacy.
