The Republic of Azerbaijan: sacred pearl of the Caucasus

While humanity is confronted with conflicts related to intolerance, incomprehension, little or no dialogue between cultures, religions and civilizations, a nation stands out in this tormented anthill: Azerbaijan.

A transcontinental state at the crossroads of civilizations

This Republic, which was independent in 1991 and which was formerly banned from religious practice under Joseph Stalin, seems to take its revenge on this prohibition, in view of its numerous liturgical connections. The most obvious example is his relationship with the three monotheistic and abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

This Muslim-majority country has established diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Holy See (Vatican) from the very beginning of its independence.

Like Senegal, I would say. However, if building relationships is a good thing, maintaining those relationships is another. What distinguishes Azerbaijan significantly from other countries is the many international initiatives and events that it sponsors. One could cite, but not be exhaustive:

  • About Christianity : In 2002, the Pope's famous welcome for apostolic visits. Indeed, Pope John Paul II had visited Azerbaijan. He was followed by the memorable welcome of Pope Francis who was there in 2016. The two spiritual leaders praised Azerbaijan's efforts to promote living together and interreligious dialogue.
  • About Islam: In 2004, the « Islamic Cooperation Youth Forum ». The Islamic Youth Forum with its Eurasia Regional Centre in Baku, celebrating its 22 years of existence this year has become the largest Muslim Youth Platform in the world. Seminars, conferences and workshops are held periodically in Baku, with the presence of many international participants, contributing to cultural dialogue.
  • About Judaism : After Baku accepted the erection of synagogues and other Jewish places of worship in the country, the Conference of European Rabbis was to be held in Azerbaijan in 2025. The adherents of Judaism in Azerbaijan practice their worship without obstacles on the part of the State which respects all beliefs and promotes interfaith dialogue.
  • Cultural aspects : In 2016, the holding of the 7th edition of the global forum of the alliance of civilizations, in relation to the UN, with the presence of high spiritual personalities such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize.

In 2011, the holding of the 1st Global Forum on Intercultural Dialogue in relation to UNESCO, the Council of Europe and ICESCO, with the participation of official representatives from 102 countries will follow the editions 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

The next edition of the World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue will be held in October 2026 in Baku, under the patronage of His Excellency Ilham Aliyev.

The OIC Summit in 2027 in Azerbaijan will symbolize, if necessary, the confidence that the Muslim and world community places in Azerbaijan, a country promoting peace, living together, understanding, understanding and cohesion among nations.
The Baku International Centre for Multiculturalism is undermining Azerbaijan's peaceful efforts to advance our common humanity.
