Under the leadership of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Senegal continues to mediate in ECOWAS. A delegation led by the Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and External Senegalese, Sheikh Niang visited Bissau on 26 October 2026 for consultations with political and social actors, as part of efforts to restore constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau.
As part of the mandate given by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)Senegal conducted a diplomatic mission to Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau. This initiative is a continuation of regional efforts to promote a peaceful and inclusive return to institutional normality.
Minister Cheikh Niang, representing Senegal, met with Guinea-Bissau's living forces — political parties, civil society and transitional institutions in order to collect their positions and proposals on the prospects for exit from the crisis.
Open and constructive exchanges
Discussions focused on the political and institutional situation of the country, the stages and modalities of the transition, and the expectations of the various stakeholders regarding the ECOWAS and the international community.
The Senegalese Minister also paid courtesy visits to the President of the Transition and the Prime Minister, while exchanging with members of the National Transitional Council and the diplomatic corps accredited in Bissau.
These exchanges, marked by a spirit of openness and responsibility, reaffirmed Senegal's commitment to work towards a lasting political solution that respects Guinea-Bissau's sovereignty.
Senegal as a pillar of regional solidarity
The assessments and proposals collected will be forwarded to the competent bodies of the ECOWAS to guide the next steps in mediation. With the historic ties of fraternity and solidarity between Dakar and Bissau, Senegal reaffirms its readiness to continue the necessary consultations in a spirit of impartiality and dialogue.
This approach aims to consolidate political and institutional stability in Guinea-Bissau, while strengthening regional cooperation for peace and democracy.
This mission at the heart of the stabilization process once again illustrates Senegal's proactive diplomacy for stability in West Africa, while respecting the values of dialogue, responsibility and regional solidarity.
